The mother of a 15 year old girl who was brutally stabbed in the stomach using a smashed glass bottle of cough medicine is this week appealing for witnesses to the attack which occurred on Saturday night, just a minute’s walk away from her home.
The girl who was due to sit her mock Junior Certificate examinations is this week recovering from her injuries after she was set upon by two Eastern European males after they asked her for a cigarette and she responded that she didn’t have any.
One of the men ripped from her grasp a bottle of Benyllin which she had been carrying and smashed it in half. He then pulled her top up and plunged the broken glass into her stomach.
The school girl was making her way from her home to that of her friend’s just a couple of minutes away in Clonard Village when the men approached.
After the attack they quickly hurried away from the scene laughing, leaving the injured teenager to call her friend to come to her aid.
She was carried to her friend’s home and the Emergency Services were called to the scene.
“I was on my way home from work in Dublin when it happened, I got a terrible fright when I got to the door and saw the Gardai were there. Blood was gushing out and she was hysterical,” said the mother of the girl.
The injured party was conveyed to Wexford General Hospital where she was treated for three deep laceration wounds to her stomach area.
“Thankfully she did not suffer any serious internal damage, but this is still a very serious assault especially on a girl so young,” said the mother.
She continued: “What is most frightening about the whole thing is that it happened so close to home. You hear of this kind of thing happening down the town on a Saturday night, but not in these circumstances and to a girl especially.”
The men are believed to have taken with them the part of the bottle used as a weapon. However, the rest of the bottle was recovered from the scene and is being forensically examined.
Gardai are also carrying out enquiries as to whether there is any CCTV of the area as a number of businesses operate in the vicinity.
The men have been described as being approximately 5 foot 8 inches in height and of medium build. One was dressed entirely in black while the other wore a grey top and Adidas tracksuit.
The girl was unable to determine what colour hair they have because both had their hoods up. They were both wearing camouflage coloured cowl neck scarves also.
Anyone who may have any information is asked to contact Wexford Garda Station on 053 9165200.
