GARDAI HAVE made progress, it is understood, in investigations relating to a terrifying armed raid that took place just before Christmas at John Molloy Metals in Ballycarney.
Reports in the national media at the weekend stated that detectives were working on the theory that two people from Clondalkin were involved in the robbery after being tipped off by local criminals.
The incident happened at lunchtime on December 18 when the three-man group entered the premises in an Audi A8 and proceeded to the office port-a-cabin where they came across Mr. Molloy, his wife Trish and a customer.
The video shows the two men, later joined by a third man, shouting and ordering the three people. They then proceeded to ransack the office, searching for cash and going so far as to empty paper from the bin.
Speaking to The Echo following that ordeal, Mr. Molloy said: “When you have a gun pointed in your face six or seven times, it’s not a nice experience. We were terrified.” The robbery has had a profound effect on the family which is still experiencing the after-effects of the trauma.
The suspects are understood to be on remand in Cloverhill at the moment but were questioned at Gorey Garda Station. A national newspaper said that they were considered very violent, with links to west Dublin organised crime gangs.
No charges have yet been brought.
