Storm Darwin wreaked havoc across Wexford last week with the Wexford Bohemians Football Club being one of the biggest casualties.
The Piercestown Road based club is this week assessing the damaged that was caused to its facilities when gale force winds completely lifted the roof off its changing rooms and blew them over on to the side of the pitch.
Senior management have expressed their concerns at the severity of the damage caused and said that this latest blow forces the club into an even worse financial position than before.
“We are at a crossroad. There is fear for the club. We either pull together or this could spell the end of the club,” said Vice Chairperson of the club David Dodd.
After a 30 year residency at Killane Castle, Drinagh, Wexford Bohs relocated in 2008 to its current home grounds off the Rosslare Road and it invested over €25,000 in these mobile changing rooms, which have now been completely destroyed in this most recent bout of inclement weather on Friday night.
“Because we are only leasing here we couldn’t put up a permanent structure we had to get mobile prefabs,” explained Mr Dodd. These temporary structures, however, proved too weak to withstand the force of the storm.
The club purchased three separate containers, which were converted into two changing rooms, and a separate unit kitted out with shower and washroom facilities.
On Saturday morning a group of members from the club joined by Wexford Borough Councillor Anthony Kelly visited the site to assess the scale of the damage caused.
It is estimated that it will cost in the region of €15,000 to repair the current facilities.
In the meantime the club will be forced to either operate without changing facilities or play all of their home games away.
The committee is set to hold an emergency committee meeting tonight (Tuesday) with a view to establishing a plan for fundraising. It is expected that club directors will also appeal to the FAI for emergency funding.
