THE DAYBREAK shop and post office in Ballymurn was the victim of a “sophisticated” and “professional” robbery, which saw the owner at a loss of over €30,000.
Peter Doyle’s Daybreak shop in the small, rural village was broken into on Thursday night and €15,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen. Another €15,000 worth of damage was caused when the culprits destroyed electrical and phone wires, and attempted to access the safes with a sledgehammer and concrete-saw.
The thieves gained access to the wiring of the building through the roof before cutting through a door and gaining entry to the strong room and shop floor. They removed the hard drive from the CCTV footage.
Speaking to The Echo in the aftermath of the robbery, Mr. Doyle said: “It’s terrible. It’s hard enough to stay open at the moment between the recession and everything. It’s just one thing after another. I’m not the only person who’s a victim of this.”
