After a long running saga and public consultation regarding future plans for Gorey Showgrounds, something positive has emerged with the approval of funding for a 550 metres walking track to be installed around the perimeter of the Town Park and the Showgrounds.
€58,824 is coming from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, to be matched with €67,000 from Wexford County Council, to form a total investment of €126,000.
The 10-acre site was purchased by Wexford County Council in 2008 with plans to make Gorey Showgrounds a public amenity for the people of the town and neighbourhood to enjoy.
The Council set about developing a long term plan and to secure funding from a range of sources to develop a multi-use sports and community complex.
As the site adjoins the Town Park, the Council saw an opportunity to reinvigorate the park and aim to provide a pleasant mix of amenity spaces and games areas.
“This is a first step in the re-development of the town’s public parks and will be a huge boost to fitness enthusiasts,” said Senator Michael D’Arcy, who added; “The track will provide a free, safe and well lit facility for walkers and joggers to use at their leisure.”
