An outpouring of grief gripped Wexford town as the sad news that Liam Walsh had passed away broke late on Saturday night.
The popular and charismatic boxing coach was diagnosed with terminal cancer less than three months ago and the 75 year old passed away surrounded by his family at his home in Wolfe Tone Villas.
Speaking to the Wexford Echo just days before his death he remarked “I’m an ordinary working man”, but in recent days hundreds have rushed to pay touching tributes to the modest and quick-witted man, many of whom describing him as a “true gentleman” and “one of Wexford’s finest men.”
Just a fortnight before his passing, Mr Walsh received a standing ovation at a packed National Stadium when the Wexford man stepped into the ring to accept a special award from Irish Amateur Boxing Association President Tommy Murphy, who introduced him to the crowd as “one of the great stalwarts of Irish boxing””.
He is the father of Irish Boxing Head Coach Billy Walsh and grandfather of All Ireland light welterweight champion Dean Walsh.
