Camross (JC13)-1The Camross Drama Group is this week preparing to raise the curtain on its latest production; “Wake in the West” which will be staged at St Michael’s Hall on Green Street, directly opposite the CBS.
The three-act play that was originally written by Michael Joe Ginnelly runs from Friday, March 28th, until Sunday, March 30th, inclusive.
Set in rural Ireland during the 1960s the story centres on the death of a man called Tom. Following his passing, Tom’s doctor relates his dying wish to be cremated to his family and friends.
“You’ve got to remember this is the 1960s and at that time this would not have been the norm!” said Gillian Dunlop of the Camross Drama Group.
Ms Dunlop added that the story follows a number of different comic scenarios, which unfold during the course of the wake.
In one particular scene her own character Rose decides that it would be a terrible waste to allow Tom’s false teeth to go to waste so she attempts to remove them while he lies in repose.
A number of other side stories unfold including a rekindled romance between the deceased’s son who returns from America for the funeral and the ups and downs of an alcoholic’s dysfunctional marriage, but perhaps the most entertaining element is the surprising twist in the tail.
“It really is a very funny play,” said Ms Dunlop.
She added: “We were thinking that because it falls on the weekend of Mother’s Day it is also an idea for people to bring their mother along to the show.”
The group are running a competition with two tickets up for grabs. All anyone needs to do to enter is “like and share” the new Camross Drama Group Facebook page.
Tickets are on sale at the door on the night.
The show commences at 8p.m. and doors open at 7.30p.m. each night.
