Wexford jockey Mikey Fogarty has been ruled out of tomorrow’s Crabbies Grand National following a bad fall over the National fences today.
The Cleariestown jockey fractured two verterbrae when Bishopsfurze fell at the fifth fence in the Topham Chase.
Mikey has suffered a fractured T3 and T4 and tonight is stable in Aintree University Hospital.
He was due to have his first ride in the big race on Vesper Bell for Willie Mullins.
Monbeg Dude is now 14/1 for tomorrow’s showpiece and he will be closely followed in Wexford, especially in the Kiltealy and Ballindaggin areas, where the nine year old is not only honoured with a local place-name, but was given his earliest education to racing in that region.
However, there could be a change of jockey as Paul Carberry was injured today and taken to hospital with a pelvis injury.
Now trained by Michael Scudamore in the UK, Monbeg Dude was the winner of the Welsh Grand National at the end of 2013.
He was bought at the Land Rover Sales for €4,000 by Eamonn Doyle, Ballindaggin, and Colin Bowe trained him to win a point-to-point at Nenagh before he was sold for €12,000 to Michael Scudamore at the Cheltenham Sales.
The only Wexford trained runner in the race watched by 700 million people worldwide is Quito De La Roque who comes from Colm Murphy’s stables at Killenagh, near Gorey.
Brian O’Connell will take the ride. He is currently quoted at 40/1.
He is a ten year old “who jumps well and travels well” according to his trainer.
