The Schooner Bar in Ballygarrett gets a make over for a starring role in John Banville’s story ‘The Sea’ when filming took place there last year.
The much anticipated first screening of The Sea, adapted from Wexford author John Banville’s novel of the same name, comes to Movies@Gorey next Monday, April 14th at 7 pm.
The 86 minute movie with a 12a certificate was filmed in Gorey, Courtown, Ballymoney and Old Bawn and showcases North Wexford in its best light!
Starring roles were bestowed on Ciarán Hinds, Charlotte Rampling, Natascha McElhone, Rufus Sewell, Bonnie Wright, Missy Keating, Sinéad Cusack, and many locals who were cast as extras.
At the recent IFTA’s, Sinéad Cusack won ‘best supporting actress’; John Banville won an award for the script; Ciarán Hinds was shortlisted for ‘best actor’ and the film was nominated for the top award.
The Sea is an adaptation of a novel by John Banville that won the Man Booker Prize in 2005 and is set in a sleepy seaside resort that is revisited by ghosts from the past.
The blurb released by the film-makers describes The Sea as “a haunting, uplifting, meditation on the human condition – at times elegiac, poetic and nostalgic. A story of memory, love, loss, regret… and the persistently possibility or rebirth.”
Monday night’s showing is described as “a very special gala screening” and the proceeds will be divided between four local schools – Ballygarrett National School, Gorey Community School, Riverchapel National School and Tara Hill National School.
Tickets are priced at €10 and can be purchased directly from the schools above.
