RESPONSES TO last week’s story about the arrival of a Great White Shark to Hook Head have been coming in like a tidal wave to The Echo office for the past seven days.

To mis-quote a classic shark-related move: We’re going to need a bigger boat, we caught so many.

The story which was linked on Facebook, Twitter and beyond on April Fool’s Day garnered thousands of hits. The Echo’s own webpage was viewed 7,500 times at the time of going to print with 1,300 of those recommending the link on Facebook.

Meanwhile, the Wexford Echo Facebook page link recorded a viewership of over 4,500.

And links to the article and photograph on Miley Carroll’s four Facebook pages also came in with high numbers, each one averaging around 9,000 hits. At an estimate, approximately 40,000 people viewed the image and story between website and Facebook hits.

All of this has highlighted the number of avid shark hunters in the Wexford area and this week, The Echo has continued to track the shark and pinpointed in several more locations including: the River Slaney, a pothole in one of our rural areas (which makes us question what exactly the council is filling them with) and the lake in Johnstown Castle.
