The first stage of the Gorey 3-Day Cycle Race came to a premature end this afternoon when a road traffic collision blocked the Gorey to Craanford road and the race had to be abandoned.
The drama unfolded at Coolishall just after 3 pm when a car pulled out from junction L15077 and was struck by a second car.
It happened just a few minutes before the cycling field of 199 riders were on their final approach to the stage finish in Craanford village.
A Garda car accompanying the race came on the incident and immediately stopped the race on safety grounds, while an ambulance travelling with the riders provided medical aid while awaiting HSE ambulances from Wexford.
Two occupants were treated at the scene before being removed to hospital and tonight a Garda source described both persons’ as having “non-serious injuries.”
Nobody associated with the race were injured and two units of the fire brigade from Gorey were quickly on scene.
The road was closed for about two hours afterwards.
The cycle race, in its 48th year will resume in the morning at 9 am with an individual time trial at one minute intervals on the Enniscorthy road and finishing at the Monument.
From 2.30 pm tomorrow they will compete over four laps of the Gorey- Craanford- Camolin circuit finishing at the Monument at approximately 4.50 pm.
