THERE IS widespread shock in New Ross following the death of a woman in her 60s as a result of a road traffic accident.

Ellen (Nellie) Doran (63), Riverside, Waterford Road (and late of Raheen, Rosbercon), died when the vehicle in which she was a passenger crashed into a wall at Harvey Place at around 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Gardai arrived at the scene within minutes and rendered assistance to Mrs. Doran who was travelling in the front of the vehicle when the accident occurred.

A doctor from Caredoc also attended the crash but unfortunately Mrs. Doran succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Supt. Jim Doyle spoke to The Echo about the incident which is being fully investigated.

The car was travelling towards the Three Bullet Gate, from the direction of Haughton Place, when the accident occurred.

No other vehicle was involved.

“The driver of the car appeared to lose control and the vehicle collided with a concrete pier,” said Supt. Doyle.

“The driver was taken by ambulance to Wexford General Hospital,” he added.

Contrary to some media reports about the incident over the weekend no-one was arrested in relation to the accident but the matter is now being fully investigated.

“There was no other passenger in the vehicle,” said Supt. Doyle.

The scene was preserved for a Garda forensic examination and the car involved was removed from the scene to a secure lock-up where it was also forensically examined.

The Dorans had been living in the U.K. for many years but had recently returned home to Ireland.

Mrs. Doran (nee: Berry) is survived by her husband, Paddy, three brothers, two sisters, relatives and friends.

Her Requiem Mass will take place at 11 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, April 22, in the Parish Church, New Ross, with burial afterwards in St. Stephen’s Cemetery.
