BK2013-B

THE RED Cross has launched its first New Ross branch.

The launch ceremony took place on Thursday night in Spider O’Brien’s pub in South Street.

However, the branch is calling on local people to volunteer and become part of the world’s largest humanitarian network.

Commenting on the initiative to The Echo local woman, Emer Kirwan, said: “The New Ross IRC unit will provide first aid cover and services to the public which is much needed in the south Wexford area.”

A qualified Medic, Ms. Kirwan went on to say that the organisers of the branch are aware of many people throughout the locality with first aid skills while there are many more people with the desire and ability to attain them.

“The aim of IRC New Ross is to bring them together and form a unit that can benefit the local community,” she said.

The Irish Red Cross network of over 5000 volunteers makes a difference in communities across the country. The range of events at which IRC members can be seen is varied and includes everything from concerts to sports events.

The organisation also helps search for missing people in addition to providing other forms of care in the community.

“Being a member of the IRC is a thoroughly rewarding experience,” said Ms. Kirwan.

“If you have no first aid training, don’t worry, we will provide you with the skills you need,” she added, referring to people who might be interested in finding out more about the organisation.

Following on from the establishment of the new IRC branch there will be a Cardiac First Responder Scheme set up which will enable volunteers to assist the emergency services in providing life-saving skills throughout the town and district.

At Thursday night’s launch a committee was set up to run the local branch. Anyone interested in volunteering or finding out more about the branch contact Emer or Leo on 085-2899455 or email: [email protected]

The branch also has a Facebook page.
