One of the departing generous gestures undertaken by Gorey Town Council was setting aside a budget for the annual Voluntary Groups Funding and 46 groups in the community were honoured by the Council at a special function held in the Market House on Gorey’s Main Street last Tuesday evening.

Speaking at the presentation, Cllr. Michael D’Arcy, Chairman, said; “The annual voluntary contribution has never been a large amount for any one group, but spread over 46 groups it is a significant part of the discretionary budget of the Town Council.”

He believed that the funding which was available has helped groups to develop and become more sustainable for the future.

“There are always people in the community with something to offer and often they are just waiting to be asked,” stated the Chairman, who added, “I have always been impressed by the range of community and voluntary activity we have within the town and the scope of your work extends to all areas of the town – music, sport, the arts, young people, care of the elderly and vulnerable in society, and animal welfare to name but a few.”

Cllr D’Arcy said he hoped “this grant will assist you in your work,” and with the term of the Town Council drawing to an end the new Municipal Councils will be formed after the up-coming elections.
