A Gorey man appeared at Wexford District Court on Monday, May 19th, charged with the robbery of €995 from Aldi on the Coach Road in Gorey on the previous Saturday.
Kinsella, who has an address at 98 Clonattin Village, had previously appeared at a special sitting of Gorey District Court on the night of the robbery and was remanded in custody to appear at Wexford District Court on Monday morning.
The defendant’s mother Mary Kinsella came to court and volunteered to act as surety. Ms Kinsella told the court that if released on bail, her son would not abscond. “I could guarantee you that, I’d bet my life on it that he would be at the next court sitting.”
Inspector Pat MacDonald on four separate occasions her son had failed to appear at court and bench warrants were issued for his arrest.
Ms Kinsella attributed this to a lengthy hospital stay and the fact that on a number of occasions he failed to receive court summons in the post.
She added that she was eager to ensure her son was released from custody because he was taking regular medication that he would not get while in custody.
Judge Gerard Haughton said that he was prepared to fix bail, but reminded the defendant that it was a “serious” charge that he was facing.
The judge fixed bail at €300, €100 of which had to be lodged in the court on the day.
He also attached strict bail conditions to his release.
The mother and son are in the process of moving to a new home and have temporarily agreed to stay with the defendant’s sister at 9 Middleton Valley, Riverchapel, Gorey, for a period of two weeks.
Judge Gerard Haughton instructed Kinsella to adhere to a strict curfew between 9p.m. and 8a.m. he also ordered the defendant to sign on daily at Gorey Garda Station and to stay out of all Aldi supermarkets.
