Ministers Simon Coveney and Leo Varadker are attending the first day of the Golden Shears festival in Gorey.

The Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, TD, has launched the 16th Golden Shears festival in Gorey this morning.

Minister Coveney complimented everyone associated with the event and described it “as a global event for the next four days.”

Minister for Tourism, Leo Veradker, TD, also visiting the first day of the festival commented that it was “a big boost for the area. It gets Gorey and Wexford on the map.”

In the dome, the competitions began at 7 am with 15 heats of the All Nations Open Wool Handling, followed by 7 heats of the junior championships.

The shearing heats will go on all day, but the first gold medal will be presented about 5.30 pm when the All Ireland Open Shearing Final will be decided.

The crowds are visiting the various stands and attractions and Gardaí are very happy with the traffic management plans with no difficulties or delays reported.
