The doors opened at the Wexford count centre at 9a.m. and the first boxes were opened shortly afterwards at 9.30a.m.
The Gorey district boxes were the first to be opened.
The first of the Enniscorthy ballot boxes were opened shortly after 11a.m.
At midday the the first boxes from the New Ross and Wexford District were opened.
Counting has not yet officially commenced. However, officials are dividing the ballot papers into separate local and European, giving the eager tallying teams from an opportunity to gauge how they expect their respective parties to perform.
The official count is expected to commence at 2p.m.
The European election ballot papers will be sent to Dublin to be counted tomorrow (Sunday).
