The roads of North Wexford will be filled with cyclists today (Saturday) for the Cycle Against Suicide Spin Off which aims to raise awareness about suicide in Ireland (almost 800 deaths per year) and to reduce the stigma around mental health issues.

Months of preparation have gone into organising this event.

Joe Dixon explained: “The event is a follow up to the 14-day Cycle Against Suicide ride around Ireland and because we didn’t reach every community we decided to have spin-off’s which are one day events and we are bringing the cycle to Gorey and what we want to do is to raise awareness about mental health issues.”

The start and finish is at Gorey Community School where registration will take place from 10 am.

The cycle starts at 12 noon and will return via the Main Street, Gorey, at 3.30 pm.

There will be a mid-stop at Courtown around 1.45 pm.

There will be a carnival atmosphere at the finish with entertainment, face painting, dancers and camaraderie.

“We are supporting all local and national Mental Health support groups, added Mr Dixon, and the slogan for the group is “It’s OK not to feel OK and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help.”
