ENNISCORTHY CAME to a standstill at the weekend to bid a sad farewell to one of its best known residents, Harry O’Connor.
The founding member and current chairman of Slaney Search and Rescue (SSR) passed away suddenly on Wednesday, causing shockwaves throughout the town.
The 58-year-old from Springvalley was carrying out business in Dublin when he collapsed from suspected heart failure. He died shortly afterwards.
A community united on Saturday for Mr. O’Connor’s Funeral Mass where his massive impact on Enniscorthy was celebrated, but a life cut too short was lamented.
St. Senan’s Church was packed to capacity of mourners, who gathered to fondly recall “a gentle giant.”
Chief Celebrant Fr. Patrick Banville was joined on the altar by neighbouring parish priest Fr. Denis Kelly, who was a close friend of Mr. O’Connor.
“Harry was full of heart, we all knew that” he said. “It’s an irony that it was his heart that failed him in the end.”
