German students in excitement mood as they cheer on their country in last Sunday evening’s World Cup Final.

Forty-two excited native Germany enthusiasts will always remember where they were when Mario Gotze scored the only goal of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil 19 minutes into extra time last Sunday evening.

They were soaking up the excitement in the Naomh Éanna GAA Complex and a long and tiring day suddenly didn’t seem to matter when Germany won the top prize in football for the fourth time.

“We were so excited. We were so happy. We were tired from the journey, but when the goal was scored everyone got so excited,” said group leader, Ulf Brix, who has been bring students to Gorey every summer for the past 24 years.

The students only arrived on Sunday afternoon, but they brought their colours – hats, scarves, flags – and had arrangements in place to watch the game on the big screen.

“Many of the host families joined with us at Naomh Éanna to watch the game and it was very kind of Larry Cullen to arrange everything for us,” added Ulf.

On a personal note, Ulf said he had a rented car and he decked it out with a German flag.

“I was driving through Gorey blowing the horn and everybody was cheering back at me. It was great.”
