Following on from an informative meeting of local business people last week, a major meeting to address commercial rates in North Wexford is planned for tomorrow, Wednesday, July 16th at 9 pm in the Amber Springs Hotel, Gorey.

The meeting has the sole purpose of campaigning for a reduction in rates in the North Wexford area, which are considerably higher than in other towns in the county.

As all businesses are now in one local authority area, that of Wexford County Council, the campaign believes that similar businesses should pay similar levels of rates.

Local government legislation provides that equalisation could take up to ten years but it could be done in a much shorter period if the local authority agrees.

September will be a crucial month as the Council will begin to prepare its budgets for 2015.

At last week’s meeting, convened by the Chairman of Wexford County Council, Cllr Malcolm Byrne, all local councillors attended or were represented, along with Cllr Barbara Anne Murphy of Bunclody, and all are committed to working with business to achieve a rates reduction in the interests of maintaining and increasing employment.

All ratepayers are welcome to the meeting on Wednesday night.
