AN ELDERLY man’s jaw was broken in a vicious assault which occurred in his jewellery shop in Enniscorthy on Wednesday, days after he reported a serious theft to Gardai.

Well known businessman Mr. Jim Kinsella (76) was attacked by a man believed to be in his 50’s on Wednesday afternoon in the Jewellery Centre, Market Square: his jaw was shattered in the incident and he was brought to Wexford General Hospital.

While recovering from his injuries, Mr. Kinsella subsequently suffered a stroke and was removed to a hospital in Dublin, where he is reported to be in a stable condition.

The assault took place after a theft at the shop the previous Saturday when a woman and a man managed to distract an assistant and stole jewellery, believed to be to the value of E3,000.

An eye witness told The Echo that as the pair left the shop, the woman dropped a necklace but picked it up before fleeing the scene in a car with two others.
