Gorey’s newest road linking the roundabout on the Enniscorthy road with the roundabout on The Avenue, constructed to facilitate access to Tesco Extra Gorey is to be named in honour of Gorey’s famous artist, the late Paul Funge.

Cllr John Hegarty told last Tuesday’s monthly meeting of Gorey Municipal Council that the decision was agreed unanimously at the previous district meeting.

Paul Funge, (1944-2011), was born in Gorey, studied at the National College of Art and Design, and was internationally recognised for his award-winning talent.

He was one of the prime movers of the art centre “idea” in Ireland as one of the founder directors of the Project Arts Centre in Dublin.

He established the Gorey Arts Centre in 1970 and was on the board of directors of the Wexford Arts Centre.
