Concerns for the efficiency of the ambulance service in North Wexford were frequently raised at meetings of Gorey Town Council and the matter was raised again at the July Gorey Municipal Council meeting.

Cllr Malcolm Byrne explained that, in the evenings, two ambulances serve Gorey, Enniscorthy and New Ross.

“If there is a major incident in the south of the county, then both ambulances are gone and north Wexford is left with none,” stated Cllr Byrne.

The Fianna Fáil councillor, who is Chairman of Wexford County Council, stated that “I have serious concerns about the ambulance service in this area and we should not let it drop.”

Cllr Joe Sullivan stated that Michael Norris, Operations Performance Manager at the HSE Ambulance Service, told him that an extra ambulance was about to be allocated to Co. Wexford.

Cllr Fionntán Ó Suilleabháin said he knew of a woman who had collected 7,000 signatures on a petition calling on the HSE to provide four ambulances for four districts.

Cllr Pip Breen explained that due to the size of Gorey and its hinterland during the holiday period the population could increase by up to 40%, but Cllr Robbie Ireton added that it could increase “by 100% or over.”
