A North Wexford councillor is calling on the business community and Gorey Municipal Council to end Gorey’s ties with Israel in protest against that country’s policy towards the Palestinian people, and in particular, the citizens of Gaza.

Cllr Fionntán Ó Suilleabhán has sent correspondence to Gorey Chamber outlining his stance on the matter.

“Former Israeli Ambassador, Zion Evrony, (now Israel’s Ambassador to the Vatican), a figure who has often publicly praised Israel’s onslaught against Gaza, has been to Gorey several times in recent years at the invite of the former Town Council and Chamber, where he was feted as a special guest.

I understand there were plans to strengthen these links into the future.

However, an increasing number of local authorities around Ireland are now backing calls for action to be taken against this terror state.

While I totally respect the positive motives of the Chamber on this matter in the past, I believe that stating your public opposition to Israeli policy would now be a very progressive, practical and principled thing to do, and would reflect the huge groundswell of revulsion felt by the people of County Wexford about the state terrorism being perpetrated against the children of Gaza.”

While Israel continues to deliberately target children, schools, hospitals, ambulances and rescue workers, I appeal to you to take a stand on this issue and use your influence to publicly state that further ties between Gorey and this murderous state will now come to an end.”

Speaking to THE GOREY ECHO yesterday, Dick White, CEO Gorey Chamber, confirmed that he had received correspondence from Cllr Ó Suilleabhán and “the matter will be discussed and addressed at our next meeting in September.”

Cllr Ó Suilleabhán has also submitted a motion to come before the September meeting of Gorey Municipal Council.

Over 10,000 demonstrators took to the streets of Dublin last Saturday where speakers called for the expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador and a boycott of goods.

THE GOREY ECHO understands that some of the largest businesses in North Wexford have substantial Israeli investment.
