Former friends and colleagues of the late Rod Johnstone are set to host a benefit night in support of his beloved young family.
The well-known Cleariestown resident died suddenly last month after suffering a cardiac arrest in his home. His death has left a profound impression on his colleagues at Johnstown Castle, who have noted that they “would like to show his family we care and pay tribute to a truly wonderful guy”.
The 50 year old was a long-term campaigner for equality among those affected by learning difficulties and disabilities.
He is survived by his loving wife Jane and the couple’s three children, two of whom are autistic.
Throughout his lifetime, he led a strong campaign to highlight each child’s right to education. His friends note that his motivation was never rooted in a drive to improve the lives of just his own family, but instead to assist all those affected.
“Both Rod and Jane had fought tirelessly and selflessly over many years for the right to education for not only their own children but for all children with special needs,” said his former colleague Joey Deane.
Mrs Deane continued: “They fought for the appointment and retention of Special Needs Assistants and they have been to the fore at both national and local level with their struggle.”
Also in May past his wife Jane ran in the local elections as an independent candidate under the Independents for Equality Movement in an attempt to highlight the plight of those families struggling to cope with cuts to special needs services. She did so with the strong support of her husband.
In the wake of Mr Johnstone’s sudden and unexpected death friends of the family have rallied together to host a benefit night, proceeds of which will be used to support his family.
The event will take place at White’s Hotel on the evening of Wednesday, November 26th.
The organisers are appealing for individuals and businesses to sponsor spot prizes for the evening also.
“Any contribution – no matter how big or small – would be greatly appreciated.”
