“ENDA KENNY – not a penny” was just one of the chants that protesters blared out as they made their way along on the Main Street on Saturday afternoon.
In excess of 2,000 men and women turned out for the second Right2Water led march in Wexford town.
The event culminated in a collective burning of Irish Water registration packs.
From its starting point at Redmond Square the crowd grew as passers-by opted to join the march as it progressed along the town’s main thoroughfare before culminating at the Bullring.
Sinn Fein county councillor Anthony Kelly stated that the event sent a resounding message to the government that the people of Wexford want ownership of the public utility returned to local government.
He added that any one political party does not govern the collective movement against the water charges and many of those who chose to protest are not associated with any particular party.
“It’s not really about party politics, in fact it’s not just about the water charges either. It’s about people saying that they have had enough of all of these little cuts such as the USC and the Property Charge also,” Cllr Kelly noted.
