NEW ROSS became one of the first towns in the country to formally switch on for Christmas at the weekend when this year’s festive lights were officially turned on.
A large crowd gathered outside the Tholsel to witness the event – which was carried out via remote control by Cathaoirleach of New Ross Municipal District Council, Cllr. Larry O’Brien.
Prior to the ceremony a wreath-laying event took place at the JFK statue on the quay-front to mark the anniversary of the late American President’s assassination.
Outside the Tholsel crowds of children waited in anticipation of seeing a very special visitor and they weren’t disappointed as Santa Claus took time out from his busy schedule to check in with local kids to make sure he had all the details correct for Christmas morning.
He then assisted Cllr. O’Brien in turning on the lights.
Following the ceremony at the Tholsel Santa and his helpers went across O’Hanrahan Bridge to Rosbercon where another lighting up ceremony took place at the tree located at the entrance onto the remains of the old bridge.
A large crowd also turned up there and children took the opportunity to meet with Santa and give him the finer details of their wish-lists.
During the lighting up ceremony at the Tholsel Cllr. O’Brien wished everyone a happy Christmas and on behalf of the local authority conveyed best wishes to everyone in the community for the festive season ahead.
