Enisc xmas fair 3 CF50

THERE WAS a sense of magic in the air in Enniscorthy on Saturday as Santa Claus took time off his busy schedule in the North Pole to pay a visit to the town.

Excited kids and their families flocked to the Market Square to catch a glimpse of the man in the red suit, hoping to provide him with a last-minute reminder of their Christmas lists as the big day fast approaches.

A huge crowd accumulated in the centre of the town, which was a hub of activity throughout the day.

Stephen Murphy M.C’d on the stage in front of the recently-erected Christmas tree, while the first heat of a talent competition had everyone whooping and cheering.

The delightful dollies took part in some delightful line dancing, followed by South East Rock ‘n’ Roll Club, who demonstrated some very different moves.

The festive action really began at 4 p.m, when Bui Bolg unleashed a spectacuar parade to work its way through the town.

The sight of St. Nicholas atop his shiny sleigh bounding into the Square caused excitement amongst the youngsters to reach fever pitch, as they hopped up on their parents shoulders to get a better look.

Santa was followed by some dancing elves, snowmen and even moving trees covered in tinsel, as well as the stunning Ice Queen and the notorious Old King Cole – who attracted his fair share of boos!

As soon as Mr. Claus exited his vehicle and made his way to the stage he was greeted by an enthusiastic Cllr. Barbara Ann Murphy, Chairperson of Enniscorthy Municipal District.

The jolly Father Christmas greeted all the boys and girls who had scrambled further to get as close as possible to their festive hero as he asked if they had been naughty or nice this year.

He wished everyone a “Very Merry Christmas” before making the big switch and lighting Enniscorthy up – the darkness that had covered the Square disappeared as it suddenly came to life with a flurry of sparkling angels and glimmers of gold.

Santa then handed out sweets and treats to the children before making his way to his temporary home in Enniscorthy Castle, where he will joining the elf staff on Saturdays and Sundays and on Monday, December 22 and Tuesday December 23, before setting off back home that evening to make final preparations for his long journey.

Also in operation on Saturday were various craft stalls on Rafter Street, including creative concoctions from local students, which will continue this Saturday as well as Saturday, December 20 and Sunday, December 21.

Furthermore, there will be food stalls from local retailers and restaraunts, performances from local groups, Christmas characters around the town and some festive music to set the scene.
