THE ORGANISERS of the annual Rosslare Christmas Day swim enjoyed another huge success in 2014 with what was described as probably the biggest swim the village had ever witnessed.

Organiser Ray Flynn said: “We had well over 1,000 people on the beach with about 150 people who braved the waters. You couldn’t get in or out of the village and the car park was jammed, it was fantastic.”

There was plenty of mulled wine and hot soup for those who were feeling the chill and the Order of Malta and the Coast Guard was on hand in case of any emergencies. Drinks and cups were provided by Kelly’s Hotel and the local Centra while Wexford Co. Council was thanked for allowing use of the lifeguard tower.

But there were only smiles on the day, according to Mr. Flynn: “It was lovely to see so many people smiling and happy and enjoying the day.”

The swim is the 28th one to take place in the village but there have been years when only one person has turned up but the event went on regardless: “It’s a tradition which has gone from strength to strength over the years. It’s very much a community event and everyone enjoyed the day.”

So what gets so many people out on a beach on Christmas Day willing to brave the elements of cold water? A bucket collection on the day raised over €2,000 for St. Mary’s Daycare Centre in Tagoat while other sponsorships took place for other charities. One group took on the task in aid of Console while other charities also benefitted.

“It’s a great way for people to raise money for all of these worthy causes,” said Mr. Flynn, before inviting the staff of The Echo to take part in the event in 2015!
