A 20-YEAR-OLD girl is this week recovering after sustaining horrific injuries as the result of being hit with a hatchet while sleeping on the couch of a friend’s house.
Nicole Dwyer, originally from Enniscorthy, was in a friend’s home in The Green, Clonard Village when the house was entered by a third man allegedly wielding a hatchet and demanding money from Ms. Dwyer’s friend on Monday night last.
Ms. Dwyer was asleep on the couch, covered by a duvet, when the argument became heated and the culprit allegedly swung the hatchet into the couch, striking the young woman in the process.
She was brought to Wexford General Hospital before being transferred to St. James’ Hospital in Dublin. Her jaw was broken in two places and her teeth were knocked out. She underwent surgery, having two metal plates put in her jaw and receiving 50 stitches.
Speaking to The Echo, Jenna Dwyer, the sister of the injured party, said she had been alerted to the situation by her brother after he was contacted by Nicole: “I spoke to the ambulance crew then because Nicole couldn’t speak. She couldn’t speak for a few days after the incident.”
A Garda spokesperson confirmed that a man had been interviewed in relation to the matter and was released without charge. A file is being prepared for the consideration of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
