LOCALS COULD have been forgiven for wondering what was going on in Wygram on Thursday last as roads closed, a group descended on the roundabout to take bricks out of it and a drone was buzzing overhead.

No, it wasn’t the shooting of a scene from the new Star Wars movie but rather the beginning of a new art project by Kerry sculptor Sean Lynch whose work Adventure: Capital is the Irish entry to the Venice Biennale later this year.

The sculptor is taking inspiration from an impromptu sculpture which arose out of the roundabout one night in 2008.

At a recent meeting of the Borough District of Wexford council, Director of Services John Carley remarked that at the time there was speculation as to whether the creation was art or something else, adding that it was created by someone “passing in the night”.

He added that the expectation was that the artist would do well in Venice and the subsequent hope was that he would exhibit the finished work in Wexford.

At the roundabout on Thursday, the bricks were removed and stacked as they had been in 2008 while a drone overhead took some aerial photography of the roundabout with the sculpture erected in it.
