Sporting success has created a real buzz of excitement around the corridors of Gorey Communty School following a wonderful victory in the All-Ireland Schools’ Senior Camogie ‘B’ Championship in Monasterevin last Thursday.

Two goals by Hayley Murphy inspired her colleagues and sent the supporters into a frenzy as the Gorey girls achieved a 2-6 to 1-3 advantage over Holy Rosary.

Full-forward Murphy grabbed a goal in either half to help the North Wexford school overcome a slow start that saw them fall 1-2 to 0-0 behind after just eleven minutes.

Ellen Roche, three points, two from frees, and single points from Orla Crowe and dual-goal scorer Hayley sealed the first ever title for the gallant Gorey team.

Coached by teachers and selectors, Mary Leacy, Muireann McCarthy and Fionán Casey, the team attracted a fine show of support.

Speaking to The Echo, Mary Leacy, said there was a great buzz and plenty of excitement in the school on Friday, and tomorrow morning (Tuesday) there is a special function in the school to honour the latest sporting achievers.

Gorey Community School was beaten in two ‘C’ finals in the past two years and when upgraded to ‘B’ class this year it was felt that they had a big task on hand.

“It is a great boost for the local clubs,” said Mary Leacy, who added, “North Wexford camogie would not be as strong as other parts of the county, but this success will certainly encourage a lot more involvement.”
