A ENNISCORTHY GP is warning that suicidal ideation is at a record high in the town.

Serious concerns expressed by Dr William Lynch come in the same week that a local county councillor struggled to get urgent assistance for a depressed friend.

In the very early hours of St Patrick’s morning, Cllr John O’Rourke drove a suicidal friend from Enniscorthy to Waterford Hospital, only to be told that he could bring him home again.

Talking to The Echo, Cllr O’Rourke, expressed outrage, claiming that on reaching Waterford Hospital, his friend was told that,’ it was all in his head’, and he could go home again.

However, Cllr O’Rourke claims that his friend eventually received a consultant psychologist because he refused to leave the hospital.

Meanwhile, Dr Lynch, working as a GP in Enniscorthy for the past 13 years, is worried suicidal thoughts among residents of the town is now at a crisis point, both among males and females.

“Depression is a huge problem in Enniscorthy, it is representing the erosion of our community,”said Dr Lynch.

The GP is calling for additional emergency out of hours mental health services.
