A WATER leak in a housing estate, which was reported over 16 months ago to the Co. Council, has seen, over the course of a year-and-a-half, approximately 130 million litres of water literally flowing down a drain.

The leak, which is situated in a back garden of a house in Maudlintown, is a free-flowing stream which, luckily for the homeowner, is flowing into a drain, thus not flooding their home. But the problem has been ongoing for nearly a year-and-a-half.

One local resident remarked that there had been other leaks in the area but none as bad as this one.

It is understood that workers for Irish Water examined the leak last week, following a house fire during which a water tanker was called in as the water pressure in the area was not strong enough for the brigades to use.

At the Borough District of Wexford council meeting on Monday afternoon, the matter was brought up by Cllr. George Lawlor who said the council had recently met with the residents in Maudlintown in relation to the leak. He said they were told that an estimated 10,000 litres were being leaked every hour – a total of 87 million litres each year.

A spokesperson for Irish Water said the issue was soon to be resolved with the decommissioning of backyard service pipes and new individual connections being provided.
