A RECENT commemoration event held at the Lockout Gate in The Faythe was poorly attended, as members of the original commemoration committee were not invited, due to an administration error in the Borough District of Wexford Council.

The May Day commemoration at the specially commissioned monument was running for the second year but saw a small crowd of just the Mayor Cllr. George Lawlor and a few local councillors.

Cllr. Davy Hynes, who was Mayor on the occasion of the Lockout gate’s unveiling, lamented that the event was badly organised, advertised and attended, remarking that the large committee which oversaw the centenary event should have been invited.

Helen Corish Wylde, granddaughter of Richard Corish, who was central to the events of the 1911 Lockout, was one of those who did not receive an invite to the event and she told this newspaper that it was the second year in a row that that had happened.

Both Ms. Wylde and Cllr. Hynes said they would be calling on the council to organise a better event for 2016, to coincide with the 1916 commemorations.

District Manager Angie Laffan told this newspaper that there had been an internal administrative oversight on this occasion, adding that invitations for the Lockout committee to the event had been discussed and agreed upon.
