Enniscorthy woman attacked

by Louise McCarthy

A LOCAL woman was hospitalised following a brutal assault in Enniscorthy over the weekend.

Fears for safety are mounting at Springvalley, Enniscorthy, after a woman in her mid-sixties was attacked at around 7p.m on Sunday, June 14th.

The woman was climbing the 21steps when she was approached by a man who allegedly knocked her to the ground. When the woman fell to the ground, it is believed that the man kicked her causing head-injuries.

While the woman was on the ground, it is thought that the man fled with her handbag.

Gardai arrived on the scene shortly after the incident and the woman was admitted to Wexford General Hospital. She had to get stitches on her head and it is believed that she has since been discharged, but is ‘traumatised’ by the incident.

Speaking to The Echo, a close family friend, said: “This happened to a very decent woman. I have not heard of anything like this happening in Springvalley before.”

Concern was voiced by the family friend that despite local reports of someone acting suspiciously in the area on the day, gardai were not contacted until the brutal assault had taken place.

The concerned family friend said:“She is a very independent woman, now she will be petrified to go out on her own. Noone came upon her, she was on her own during the attack. I think that if someone saw a person acting suspiciously, then the gardai should have been called. Prevention is better than cure.”
