Relations between Wexford and Germany were strengthened today with the unveiling of a memorial to a World War II rescue unveiled at Crescent Quay, Wexford, by Mayor George Lawlor,

The memorial is to the memory of the brave crew of the Wexford coaster ‘M.V. Kerlogue’ who heroically rescued 165 injured and shipwrecked German sailors in the Bay of Biscay on December 29 1943.

The names of the men are inscribed on the memorial.

The unveiling was part of the 58th annual Commodore John Barry Commemoration held in Wexford town and the national anthems of Ireland, the United States and Germany were played following a wreath laying ceremony that included contributions from Ministers Brendan Howlin and Paul Kehoe.

Many uniformed bodies were involved and there was a fine attendance of townspeople and visitors to the town.
