THE CHURCH in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in New Ross has had to be reinforced to prevent vandals from inflicting more damage to it.

The matter was raised at this month’s meeting of the Municipal District Council when Cllr. Anthony Connick said the building was “getting attacked”.

Commenting that the door of the building will have to be steel Cllr. Connick said the local authority will have to look at the situation and examine ways of preventing people from walking through the cemetery without having business there.

He specifically mentioned preventative measures to stop people using it as a shortcut.

“There are a couple of issues up there and I would ask the general public to keep an eye out,” he said.

“The windows are being broken and there was a hole [put] in the door last week,” he added.

Cllr. Connick also said CCTV facilities in the area of the cemetery should be enhanced.

Cllr. Michael Sheehan commented that there is an onus of responsibility on people to behave appropriately too and was equal in his condemnation of what is happening in the cemetery.

“It’s dreadful and it will happen again,” added Cllr. Connick.
