THE HARDWORKING volunteers from Wexford Tidy Towns were out in force on Saturday doing a final sweep of the town ahead of the coming week when it is expected that a competition adjudicator will be in town.
Last year, the town regained its bronze medal but volunteer and PRO Phil Murphy has no qualms in saying that their hope is to achieve a silver medal within three years.
The group has undertaken a number of big projects recently and carried out sterling work, brightening up previously unsightly parts of the town – particularly the old GPS site on Redmond Road and the Old Cinema, both of which had had a negative impact on that entrance route into the town.
On Saturday, the team however was putting the finishing touches on their work in the hope that the adjudicator will look fairly on them for the 2015 competition. The group has been out since May, every Saturday morning and Wednesday night carrying out clean-ups and various other projects.
There were many areas in the town, she said, which had done Trojan work of their own in their areas and she was encouraging more to follow suit.
The number of volunteers fluctuates so Ms. Murphy is calling for people to come along and get involved in the future, pointing out that if everyone looked after their own little patch it would be half the battle.
“We have a fantastic town but we’re asking everyone to take responsibility for their own areas and carry out clean-ups. We’ll supply bags, equipment and take the rubbish away but we can’t cover everywhere as we’re only a small group.
“Anyone wishing to get involved with the weekly clean-ups are also very welcome and they can find me on Facebook and send a message to find out more.”
