A YOUNG girl from Enniscorthy has shown she has a heart of gold after cutting more than 14 inches off her hair for charity.

Amy Devereux (10), from Madeira Grove, the Moyne, Enniscorthy, travelled to Anna Furlong’s Hair Salon in New Ross recently to have her ponytail cut off in aid of the Rapunzel Foundation.

The Foundation was started by Ms. Furlong to help people, especially children, affected by hair loss for whatever reason.

Amy was renowned for her hair and was always being complimented about her long red locks, however, she has no regrets at all about having it cut and when the Echo spoke to her and her mum, Claire, about what she did they both said it was very worthwhile.

“I felt weird at first,” said Amy, when asked what it felt like to have her hair cut short after a life-time of having it long.

“I also felt happy though,” she added.

She also said it was nice to do something good for someone else.

However, that is an understatement as Amy’s hair will be used to create a wig for a little 8-year-old girl in Leitrim who has no hair so her actions will transform that little girl’s life.

Amy’s mum said the whole family is very proud of Amy for what she did.

When asked how the idea came about Claire said she mentioned it to Amy having heard of the Rapunzel Foundation and its work.

“When I suggested it first she was hesitant and I said that’s grand but then Amy thought about it and came back to me a week later and said ‘I think I’ll do it’,” said Claire.

“The ponytail had to be 14 inches long and when it was at the 13 inch mark we got sponsorship cards done up,” she added.

Amy’s 4th class friends in St. Senan’s Primary School also held a wacky hair day which was a great success and Amy herself raised €450 in sponsorship which will also go towards the little girl in Leitrim.

Amy travelled to New Ross with her parents and what made the day even more special was the fact they were shown a video of the girl in Leitrim who will get her hair.

“That really made it special,” said Claire.

“We got to see the little girl who will benefit from it and that made it all the more brilliant,” she added.

Amy was also presented with a certificate on the day and a letter arrived in the post a few days later from the Rapunzel Foundation acknowledging what she had done.

People have been commenting on her hair since she got it cut and it’s all been favourable.

“Loads of people have been telling her that it really suits her and she’s over the moon about the whole thing now,” said Claire.

“They’ve also been congratulating her on what she did as well and how it will help that little girl,” she added.

She said herself and her husband, Sean, and their son, Shane, are very proud of Amy for her willingness to help someone else.

Claire also said Amy had a great day at Anna Furlongs: “She got to spend about an hour-and-a-half at the salon so she was delighted with that too.”
