Enniscorthy woman faces

eviction after 35 years

by Louise McCarthy

AN ENNISCORTHY woman who ran a takeaway in Enniscorthy for 35 years is facing eviction from her family home.

58-year-old Tammy Ianetta, raised five children and operated a fast-food takeaway from 5 Cathedral St, with her husband Dario Ianetta for over three decades.

Now the distraught woman who is in poor health is facing the grim prospect of homelessness because a court order has directed her to leave her home within one month.

Speaking to The Echo, Mrs Ianetta plans to appeal the order and claims that she believed her husband was paying the rent.

Three years ago her husband left Enniscorthy to attend his mother’s funeral in Italy and has not returned since. Approximately two years ago, the takeaway shut its doors after 35 years of business.

The landlords who are brothers Brian, Justin and Kevin O’Connor, are claiming that the rent stopped being paid in 2008 and now is in the five figure sum. The O’Connor brothers agreed to pay Mrs Ianetta €2,500 on condition that she clean the rubbish on the grounds of the premises and leave the building. According to Mrs Ianetta the court orders seeking the rent money were in her husband’s name until late last year when letters to pay the debts started being addressed to her and her three sons, Antonio, Angelo and Paschale. She also claims that she still does not have access to her husband’s bank account detailing when the rent was last paid, as everything was in his name from the beginning.

Mrs Ianetta said: “Why should I rely on my children? I am scared and sick. My husband paid the rent, he had everything in control. I only worked at the takeaway, he would give me money for the children’s food. He went back to bury his mother in Italy and said he had fallen in love with someone else. There were lots of orders for Dario to pay the rent coming in the door. It was not in my name, I ignored them, until I got a letter in my name nearly a year ago ordering me to appear in court. I am a diabetic who has blood-pressure, a hernia and a bladder problem. I can’t work now. I worked in the chippers for 35 years, it was hard work, sometimes I was working until 4am.”

Mrs Ianetta does not have contact with three of her children, but maintains a relationship with her son Antonio, who is unemployed and residing in Church St and her youngest Dario who currently lives with her. Mrs Ianetta is receiving a disability allowance of €188 per week and says her husband has refused to offer her financial assistance.
