ALMOST 150 jobs have been saved at the Taghmon depot of Irish Pride Bakeries after the company’s assets and business was sold by its receivers to Longford-based Pat the Baker.

Irish Pride went into receivership in June and while there were fears for the 120 jobs at the plant and some 20-30 more in the services side of the business, there was also some quiet optimism that the business could be an enticing offer for the many other bakeries operating in Ireland and the UK.

However, up to 60 jobs are to go at the company’s sister plant in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. The sale of Irish Pride did not include the plant and no bids were received for it meaning that its operations are to be wound down.

Retired county councillor and local farmer in Taghmon, Pat Codd said that there had been a huge welcome for the news of the plant’s sale, remarking that it was “a great boost to the local area of Taghmon.”
