NEW ROSS Rugby Club is on the crest of a wave this week after one of its players got his first fully international senior cap.

Tadhg Furlong is one of the most respected and highly regarded players to ever don the New Ross jersey, however, on Saturday he entered the senior fray against Wales in an international friendly at the Aviva Stadium.

Despite the fact the Irish side went down 10-16 to their near neighbours it was a momentous day for Mr. Furlong and the people of New Ross.

It was the first time the club had a senior international cap but it was no more than the down-to-earth 22 year-old deserved.

Having been hit with injury problems in pre-season training this year and such was the nature of his performance that he has been named in the 31-strong Irish squad set to to contest the Rugby World Cup later this month.

There he will be competing against the world’s greatest rugby nations in the hope of capturing the ultimate prize.

Mr. Furlong said he received a lot of support from colleagues at New Ross Rugby Club prior to and after the Welsh game and said it was a proud moment for him to represent his town on the Irish team.

The Leinster star is one of the most talked about young players on the contemporary Irish rugby circuit and everyone will be keeping their fingers crossed in New Ross that he will have done enough to convince Joe Schmidt to give him a starting place at the World Cup.
