Maureen O'Hara is being remembered as an Irish Woman who made the world her oyster.

The screen legend passed away yesterday at the age of 95 surrounded by her family.

Best known for her roles in Miracle on 34th Street and the Quiet man tributes are being paid to her from across the globe.

Speaking from state business in Canada Minister for the Arts Heather Humphries has said she will be greatly missed.

“Maureen O’Hara was an Irish American Icon, she became one of the great icons of Hollywood’s golden age, but of course she is best remembered at home and abroad for her role in the famous film ‘The Quiet man,’ Ms Humphries said.

“Of course that film put the West of Ireland on the international stage, all I can say is Maureen O’Hara was so proud of her Irish roots, she will be fondly remembered and indeed greatly missed.”

Festivities were underway in Cong yesterday for the fourth annual Quiet Man festival in Mayo, which Maureen attended in its first year.

Catherine Kenny of Ashford Castle in the town said Maureen was a pleasure to have to stay.

“Ms O’Hara stayed here four years ago during the first Quiet Man festival here in Cong and she stayed at the castle so I was very fortunate to have met her, lovely warm friendly woman, very chatty who made time for the staff and all our guests, it was just a wonderful experience for Cong and for all of the people here at the castle.”

Broadcaster George Hook interviewed O'Hara on a number of occasions and he has said he is devastated at her passing.

Mr Hook said Maureen's multiple skills outside of acting are often forgotten.

“A great athlete and a great singer, both of which have been sadly forgotten… she did almost all her own stunts because she was a magnificent athlete,” Mr Hook said.

“This is a great woman, this is a woman that American Congress gave citizenship for the US but allowed her to retain her Irish citizenship which was history breaking, that is how good she was.”
