A woman has died and two other people have been hospitalised following an overnight fire in Brierfield, Co Galway.

The woman, believed to be in her 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene following the blaze at a home near Moylough.

Several units of the fire brigade from Mountbellew and Tuam attended the fire in Brierfield around 11pm last night, Galway Bay fm News reports.

Two more people were taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, but it is believed their injuries are not life-threatening.

The scene is preserved this morning as gardaí conduct a technical examination.

It is understood the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
