The Government needs a robust integration plan for refugees coming to this country, the Immigrant Council of Ireland has said.

The group also said family rights, access to education, training, as well as accommodation must be prioritised.

The calls come as a Government taskforce, led by the Department of Justice, meet this afternoon to consider whether to accept hundreds of pledges of free accommodation for asylum seekers from Syria and other countries.

Jerry O'Connor, communications manager with the Immigrant Council of Ireland, said that integration is key and these people must not be left living in limbo.”

“We need to ensure that the refugees that are coming to Ireland are fully integrated that means they should have the right to be with their loved ones, if their families have been torn apart by the conflict, they do need proper access to work, access to education and access to training,” Mr O’Connor said.

“Basically we must do everything possible to ensure that they are able to call the communities they live in 'home'.”
