A woman has been killed in a crash on the Clones Road in Monaghan this morning.

It happened on the N54 Monaghan to Cavan road, at the Roslea junction.

UPDATE (1.48pm): Gardaí later stated that the female driver involved in the two-car collision was aged in her mid 50s.

She was fatally injured and her body has been removed to Cavan General Hospital.

The male driver of the other car, aged in his late 50s, was also removed to hospital. His injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

The crash occurred at around 7.50am this morning.

The road is currently closed as Garda Forensic Collision investigators are at scene and local diversions are in place.

Another crash happened further along the same road at Carson's Bridge, but there are no details of injuries relating to that incident as yet.

The road is currently closed.
