Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has said the Taoiseach has "made an eejit of himself" over his comments about calling in the army to protect banks during the financial crisis.

Enda Kenny has been under pressure to account for his remarks in Spain last week and this morning declined to say whether or not the army was specifically mentioned in any discussions.

The Taoiseach has said his comments were based on 'contingency' conversations about the potential break up of the Eurozone.

Sinn Féin's Gerry Adams has said Enda Kenny should return to the banking enquiry to fully explain his remarks.

“Pearse Doherty has quite rightly written to the banking inquiry asking for the former governor and indeed the Taoiseach to clarify the position, all of this tom-foolery, getting carried away with himselves, making an eejit of himself, shows the need for practical-based, people-centred politics.”
