The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said his comments about calling in the army to protect banks during the financial crisis were based on ‘contingency’ conversations about the potential break up of the Euro.

Enda Kenny has been under pressure to account for his remarks in Spain last week, with Sinn Féin accusing him of being caught out in a ‘tall tale’.

He has this morning declined to say whether or not the army was specifically mentioned in any discussions, but Mr Kenny has said opposition TDs are entitled to ask questions of him when the Dáil returns.

“Sinn Féin are entitled to raise any issue they like in the house, I’d like to raise a few issues with them myself,” Mr Kenny said.

“If I might clarify just one point, in respect of substantive details, when we discussed the question of the possibility of the break-up of the Euro, clearly this was a matter of major importance and the task force set up and the groups who discussed this, discussed in general the contingencies that might be required there.
